Voice for Life statement in response to the Green Party abortion policy

Last Friday The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand announced that the introduction of a new extreme abortion law in New Zealand was going to be adopted by them as an official party policy.

Voice for Life considers this development very troubling.

The policy is intrinsically flawed, in that it proposes to enshrine and expand, in legislation, a very grave violation of human rights and social justice - the aborting of unborn human beings in the womb.

The policy itself, as it is presently worded, also contains many very troubling aspects that no person of goodwill in this country could give their support to.

Things such as:

  • Stripping the right to freedom of conscience from medical practitioners
  • Legalising abortions after 20 weeks on the highly dubious and subjective grounds of ‘severe fetal abnormalities’ (a term vague enough to encompass many persons with disabilities)
  • A clause that clearly seems to be aimed at harming pro-life crisis pregnancy centres (some of the only places in NZ that offer real support and options to women)
  • A refusal to make pre-abortion counselling a legal requirement, even though a lack of counselling would mean the likelihood of informed consent would be placed in serious jeopardy


Serious questions have also been raised about the authorship of the policy, with the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand (ALRANZ) having had involvement in producing this policy.

These are only a few of the problems with this newly proposed policy.

On top of this, in recent days, Green Party personal have also been caught publicly misrepresenting what the current NZ abortion laws actually say.

Voice for Life is calling on the Greens to withdraw this policy and seek better alternatives if they are truly serious about supporting women in unplanned and crisis pregnancy while at the same time being consistent in their commitment to human rights, the common good and social justice - all of which begin in the womb.

We also ask all people of goodwill to charitably make their opposition to this policy known to their local Green Party MP or candidate.
